I’m Gary Carbon—a lifelong illustrator and fine artist working in oil, gouache, and pencil on mylar. My art has appeared in books like Thrilling Adventure Yarns, Phenomenons, and Athena Voltaire, and I’ve contributed to classic pulp titles including The Spider and Sherlock Holmes. I didn’t grow up reading the pulps, but I stumbled into that world by chance—and found a perfect fit for my sensibilities and style.
I’ve always drawn—just not always well. But I stuck with it. Over the years, I’ve pushed myself to develop stronger technique, storytelling, and anatomy, learning through study, practice, and plenty of small brushes. I often work with models to create my reference, building scenes from scratch that capture mood and character, then translating that into traditional or hybrid pieces.
Whether it’s a published book cover or a personal painting, I approach each piece as a moment of story—sometimes heroic, sometimes strange, sometimes unsettling. This site is where I share that work.
Thanks for stopping by.
I’ve never smoked a day in my life, but way back when, I thought it would be a fun, and ironic picture.
